Bending the Receiver from Flat

My first attempt at bending a flat into an AK receiver was with grasshopper's poor man's jig (click on the link to get the original article on gunco that prompted me to try this method). Pictures of my own grasshopper's jig set up can be found here.

For my more recent builds I have been using a DPH Arms bending jig and a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight. Here are some pictures of the process:

Getting ready to start... the flat has been installed and screwed in:

I used the CRC brand cutting oil to lubricate the flat as it was being pushed into the jig. This is a high pressure, high stress oil.

Begin pressing...

Checking when the jig bottoms out in its frame...

Now to do the rails... using a small deadblow hammer:

and also a bucking bar:

All done bending:

Checking the corners. Not as sharp as on a 100% manufactured receiver (NDS for example) but still pretty darn good.

We are going to build some kits.....
