Pictures of AKs that I built - Romanian "G"

Here is a romanian "G" mode -- the most plentiful kit on the market today. This one is built on a NoDak Spud NDS-3 receiver:

The leather sling is of Hungarian origin, ordered from Cope's. I really like the feel of these slings and will be ordering more from them.

The finish is Duplicolor, sprayed, baked, then left alone for a couple of weeks.

One of the lessons learned while using Duplicolor: PREHEAT the metal before spraying the finish!! I think this holds true for Moly Resin too.

This image captures the receiver detail. Note my white (S)afe and red (F)ire paint job. I was rather happy with how that turned out:

Next up is another romanian kit, built on a blank bent using a 1" corner and some 1 1/4" welding steel -- a poor man's bending jig. Instructions on how to build and use such a jig can be found here.

You may notice that the receiver does not have corners as sharp as the NDS receiver. Overall, if you try this method, just for the fun of it or really because you want to save money - it probably won't be your best-looking rifle, but it will function. Bending this way felt more "from-scratch-like" than using a press and jig:

The finish here is also Duplicolor. This time I preheated all the metal to about 150F before spraying. The paint stuck somewhat better, but I would not call this finish 'durable' in any serious way... I knew what I was getting into with Duplicolor and I accept that someday I will have to refinish these.
